Dinotopia. Dino-freaking-topia. WHOOHOO!

Okay, nerd alert. When I was in grades one through seven, I was a total dinosaur freak. I was going to be a paleontologist, I memorized Greek and Latin prefixes, I designed and named my own dinosaurs (hey, who didn't?), and I discovered a fantastic little book by a man named James Gurney.

I fell in love, I tell you. Those hardcovers and subsequent novels were a passion before there was such thing as Harry Potter. I memorized the footprint alphabet, even. Come to think of it, there's probably a place that you can download it as a font.

Now, I just finished watching part 1 of the ABC miniseries (oh, sorry, they call it a megaseries), and I, as a very picky fan, am quite happy.

Yes, they made a few hiccups here and there, but I was very pleased with how they kept some continuity with the original storylines.
Yes, they switched the captial of Dinotopia. It's supposed to be Sauropolis, not Waterfall City.
Yes, they changed the Code of Dinotopia. The last line is not 'Fin- ....', it's 'Don't p- .....'.

Nallab said it was 'Don't pee in the bath.'

They are really taking the whole sunstone thing out of proportion, but I guess that they needed a crisis gimmick to make it more appealing for TV.

I'm really looking forward to the Skybax areas of the story coming up. They were always my favorite part in the other stories. They seem to be a bit more militaristic here, but I believe that it's a very good thing. I am disappointed that I can't see some of my favorite characters from the original come to life, like Enit, Nallab, Bix, Will, Arthur, and Tok Timbu, but I suppose that change was needed. I can easily pick out new characters that they are using as 'descendants' to satisfy the fans. Like Oonu fron Oolu, Cyrus Crabb from Lee Crabb, and Marion from Oriana (if you didn't read the second book, you won't know anything about _her_). Hey, that means Marion is a descendant from Arthur. I didn't realize that until now. It's so much fun to draw lines and conclusions between the gap of a hundred and fifty years or so. The mind of a fan is a fascinating and dangerous thing ....

If anyone hasn't read any of the Dinotopia original books, the childrens novels (especially Lost City and Windchaser), or the continuation novel (Dinotopia: Lost), I _highly_ recommend that you do.

It wakes up the kid inside you again. If you loved Harry Potter and the world the J.K. Rowling wove for so many people, then I believe that you will highly enjoy this world that James Gurney brings to life with his amazing art.

And watch the rest of the miniseries, tomorrow and Tuesday. Check local listings, because time zones really screw me up. I'm taping them.

I found out that Dinotopia has been signed or 13 episodes starting next season. I'm pleased. I hope Mr. Gurney is as well.

I'm still a nerdy little kid at heart, and I love it.
